I generally get the feeling that Godmanis is some kind of tragic figure. Admittedly, this feeling is based on emotions rather than facts. Nevertheless, I think people are trashing him for nothing (people here habitually bash everyone in the government, so it's just business as usual).
His leaving is hardly a good thing. Better to stick with one less-than-stellar course (if it even was one) than an endless succession of governments, each pulling in its own direction, or even doing nothing at all.
And on top of that, all the complainers around — the trade unions, the pensioners, the public sector workers — want money, despite the fact that it would lead to a massive budget deficit. As we know, that ends in a default — and then everyone will be a hundred times worse off than they are now. But they'll blame the government anyway.
Even if we set up a system where people directly chose the country's course, they would still bash the government.
